In John 20:19-23, on the evening of the first day of the week, the risen Jesus appears to his fearful disciples in a locked room, greets them with peace, and shows his crucifixion wounds. Overjoyed, they receive his second greeting of peace, and he commissions them as he was sent by the Father. Jesus breathes on them, bestowing the Holy Spirit and granting them the authority to forgive or retain sins.
